New Book Challenges Conventional Wisdom on End of Life

"Where There's Life, There's Life" by David M. Feldman—dean of the Jewish Institute of Bioethics and author of "Birth Control in Jewish Law"—is a wake-up call to the elderly, the sick, their caregivers and family, the medical establishment... and to all of Western society.

During a radio interview on Jewish medical ethics, the interviewer summed up by saying "Where there's life, there's hope." Feldman dismissed the summary as not only banal, but --more important--missing the point: "I'm saying, 'Where there's life, there's life. It's precious in and of itself.'"

The sanctity and value of life does not depend on any hope or promise, nor on any past or future accomplishments. It is not a question of "quality" or productivity. Life is precious because it is a gift. And no one has the right to take... or to give... that gift away.

"Where There's Life, There's Life" tackles the hard issues head on: Feldman takes a tough, yet passionately warm stand on such questions as the right to die, martyrdom, the mandate to heal, stem cell research, heart transplants and Living Wills. And he does not shy away from controversial issues like abortion, the death penalty and whether anyone had the right to remove Terri Schiavo's feeding tube.

Rabbi Feldman is a noted Talmudic scholar, medical ethicist and congregational rabbi. But he felt that his message in "Where There's Life, There's Life" was so urgent that he deliberately avoided producing an academic textbook. He even refrained from footnoting to make the book more readable and effective.
